New York Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1111-b and Suffolk Local Law 20-2009 (effective June 30, 2009). Extended by Chapter 127 of 2014 to Dec. 1, 2019, with no more than 100 intersections. A 2024 state extension did not pass and the authority expired.
Cameras
0 documented

The first listed camera went live on June 15, 2010 at the I-495 South Service Road and CR 93 in Ronkonkoma; cameras were added in 2011, 2013 and 2014. In 2020 the county reported 100 active intersections and 216 camera systems. The Suffolk Legislature voted 11-7 in September 2019 to extend the program; the cameras were switched off on Dec. 1, 2024 after the state authority expired.

The county's $30 administrative fee (Resolution 908-2012) was voided by a Suffolk Supreme Court ruling in 2020 and by the Appellate Division in McGrath v Suffolk County (Nov. 27, 2024). A proposed $57.5 million class settlement would repay up to $36 per ticket for tickets issued after April 1, 2013.
